You may have noticed a few changes around here at YaoiSuki. That's because we've moved to a new host, and in the process upgraded and altered a bunch of our features (most notably: embedded wiki and better forums). Unfortunately, we lost our user database in the move, so those of you who were signed up will unfortunately need to sign up again. It's a pretty painless process though!

Antique Bakery ( See ANN entry)
Review through volume 3, no spoilers.
Sex rating: PG-13
Art: B
Story: B
Action: N/A
OVERALL: B+. The phrase "scratch and sniff yaoi" is the best conversation starter ever.
Don't worry; it's just the cake on the cover that's scratch and sniff.

| This manga is wonderfully funny. It's hard to keep track of what's going sometimes, due to too many flashbacks. The first few chapters are really choppy and poorly done, story-wise, but after that is picks up and gets really good. By volume three the storylines get a bit more serious, but retain the humor which is integral to the feel of the series. | |
Poor Ono is a master pastry chef who can't keep a job due to being a gay of demonic charm. He can make any man fall for him and can never resist using his powers to seduce co-workers, only to drop them when the next cute thing walks through the door. Fortunately, the owner of Antique Bakery is strangely immune to his charm. Hopefully, his job at Antique Bakery wont end in men fighting over him...
The plot is usually driven by the drama around the main characters, with their weird quirks and checkered pasts. The shop has to work around Ono's charm and fear of women when hiring employees. An owner with a tragic past, a sweets obsessed apprentice and an incompetent kitchen assistant round out the main cast.
Do not read this if you are on a diet. If this title doesn't have you raiding your cupboard you are a stronger one than me. We may never see gay porn in this series, but there is definitely food porn. There are beautifully drawn and lovingly described desserts in almost every chapter. While this series does not have the type of cream filling I typically like in a manga, it's great even without the boysex.
