Makoto Tateno's debut work, and also the debut offering from Deux.

The Konoe and Kazuki families have been feuding for a long time. They live in bordering estates. Each of these families has a son, Masaya and Yuma, respectively. Masaya, our uke, has a love-hate relationship with Yuma. Yuma is a seme of the bastard sort. He likes to tease Masaya. Masaya is the sort of uke who cries often. His eyes tear up about once a chapter. Image

The blurb on the back cover, and the story itself, both reference Romeo and Juliet. There are some similarities in the setup, but the story unfolds down a different path. It turned out to be far less ansgty and more humorous that I expected. Masaya is pressured to stay away from and to do better than Yuma, but he can't manage either. Early on, much of the story involves a girl they are competing for. Even though we don't see much of her, she is also an interesting and dynamic character. It's nice to see girl characters in yaoi who aren't shallow or bitches.

The story is very enjoyable light read. There was nothing outstandingly good about it. There are not any real flaws to point out either.

The art is nicely done. It's not very different from the art in her much later work, Yellow. The only real difference in that her art in Yellow looks more realistic, especially when it comes to faces and especially jawlines.

Don't let the 'Explicit Content' or 'Ages 18+ Mature' warnings get your hopes up. The content in this book is very mild. There is implied sex, but that is about it. I assume Deux was being overly cautious.

This is the first title out from the new yaoi publisher Deux. Ok, Deux is actually one of many new publishers, but anyway. Right when you open the book you see the first page of the manga. There is no insert, color page or even title page. Right off the bat that gave me the impression that this is a very stripped down, no frills manga. That impression isn't really fair as the book does have high quality paper stock. At the end there are no translation notes, but there is a translated postscript. Also, the binding and the cover are both very stiff. I felt like I had to manhandle it to see the whole of each page. The amount of pink and sparkles on this cover did put me off a bit.

Though, when I spoke to Deux at Yaoi-Con it seemed like having those sorts of extras had not occurred to them. It is very possible that we will see features like translation notes in the future.
