Melted Love (See YaoiWiki Entry)
Review through volume 1, no spoilers.
Sex rating: Hard R
Art: B-
Story: B+
Action: B
OVERALL: B
One of the stories in here makes me think of the musical Little Shop of Horrors. Specifically the dentist. As in, "I am your dentist / And I get off on the pain I inflict!"
| So! Melted Love is a collection of shorts by Takumi You consisting of eight short BL stories. All of the stories are humorous except for one. | |
I'll start by talking about the stories, as usual. First up is a spoiled brat of a model/actor who thinks he wants a lover who'll put up with his whims, but finds that too much leeway can be as tiresome as possessiveness. Then a lab assistant spots his pushy childhood friend and lover cheating on him...the tricky part being, they just started dating three months before, and the assistant has been stuck in the lab for three months. Oops.
The third story features the aforementioned dentist, who stumbles upon a client with a dentist-phobia. After that another pair of childhood friends has some difficulties: director Tachibana figures that lawyer Kimura takes such good care of him, why don't they just get married? There's also a super-short-short featuring this couple. Then a hotel guest finally gets his hands on the hot concierge, only to find he's got more than he bargained for.
The last story of any length is a period piece featuring a tattoo artist and the scion of a samurai family, and is the one story with a fairly serious mood. It also has the most actual sex and some beautiful art. And the last story period is a humorous short-short features characters from the model/actor story and the dentist story.
I liked all of the stories in the book, which lean decidedly towards the wacky/humorous side of life (which I always enjoy). The dentist story, the director/lawyer story, and the guest/concierge story in particular set me chuckling.
While the stories were all pretty enjoyable, I found the art a little inconsistent-- in some stories it was fantastic, and in other stories some of the panels looked like they might have been rushed a bit. Then again, the stories may have been done at different times in Takumi-sensei's career, so that could explain it.
Juné labeled this book "M," but I'm calling it a hard R. Except for the tattoo story there's very little in terms of actual sex scenes and none are particularly explicit.
