Kashou no Tsuki - Preview
Kashou no Tsuki (See ANN entry)

Review through episode 2, minor plot spoilers.

Sex rating: PG (very minor references to sex)

Animation/Art: B-
Voice acting: B+
Story: B-
Action: N/A
OVERALL: C as a supposedly yaoi anime; B- if you don't factor that in.

If you're expecting anything remotely hardcore, this is not the show for you. If you're looking for some cute sort-of shounen-ai, though, you'll probably enjoy this.

Set in what I think is the Heian period in Japan, this story revolves around an onmyoji (sort of a shaman/excorcist/fortune teller) named Tsuchimikado Arimasa, and a young leopard(?) demon named Kagetsu. Arimasa is part-fox (part fox-demon? Kind of unsure on that point), and as a result of that, he has incredible spiritual powers, but grew up lonely and distrusted.Kashou no Tsuki - Arimasa and Kagetsu

One day when he was young, he rescued what he thought was a rather large black cat from...something. He kept the cat with him for some years as he grew up, but eventually his uncle made him move and leave the cat behind. Years later, Arimasa returns to his childhood home and findsnot a cat, but...Kagetsu! Don't let the hair colors fool you; apparently Kagetsu had black hair (fur) as a child but has grown blonde in the meantime. Yeah, I don't get it either.

Anyway, of course Kagetsu is actually the cat, and he winds up living with Arimasa, who he calls "sensei" (a respectful term used these days mostly for teachers and doctors, but is basically a way of showing respect for one's knowledge here).

Unfortunately, Kagetsu starts going into cat-demon puberty! Oh noes! During which time he loses some weight and starts giving off an extremely sweet scent, which is supposed to attract a mate. But if Kagetsu doesn't mate with someone within some period of time (10 days is mentioned later on in the show), his body will grow unstable and he might die. And you though YOU were desperate!

It's a bit difficult to call this a shounen-ai, actually, because of yet another little caveat on this whole mating thing: at the time of this first mating, Kagetsu gets to pick his own gender. So technically throughout the show, he is neither a boy nor a girl. Confused yet?

It's pretty clear that Kagetsu would like to mate with his sensei, but Arimasa is apparently oblivious to the actual needs of a leopard demon in puberty (it's not like Kagetsu told him, though).

Frankly, this whole chunk of the show makes me think back on my fanfiction days, especially all those Harry Potter Draco's-a-Veela fanfics. If you've read them, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about; if you haven't, you might not want to-- some of them are terrible.

Kashou no Tsuki - Oops.

Now, the above would be enough for a true yaoi that centered on sex, but this is a rated PG piece, and as a result, the whole Kagetsu-in-puberty thing takes a backseat to a vast conspiracy to force Arimasa to use his powers to protect his town's rival town, or something.

There's not much to say about this plot without spoiling, but it's interesting, although it's a pretty frustrating watch if you want to see pretty boys have sex (or hell, even kiss; there's only two places in the two episodes where it might happen and it never does), it's a sweet little story.

Interestingly, the Kashou no Tsuki manga (see Nippon-Export page) is 13 volumes long, but this little OAV is only 2 episodes. I can't speak on the quality of the manga yet, though (I'm trying to find scanlations).

Warnings: Extreme frustration on the part of the audience because they never even kiss. That's really about it.
