801 Media Panel (Extended) PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 23 October 2006
So, just to start off, by the end of this panel I was *floating*.

The first thing that the 801 Media people wanted to do was lay some rumors to rest. Then they announced their new licenses, I made a complete ass of myself in front of the whole panel, they talked about when these titles would be released, and we moved on to Q&As.

I *will* summarize this again, though: 801 Media is NOT an offshoot from DMP like Juné is. It's more like a kissing cousin to DMP; they are both owned by emanga, but they are generally run separately.

So first off, the licenses:

* Bondz by Kawai Toko
* Ichigenme wa Yaruki no Minpou by Yoshinaga Fumi
* Affair by Shiuko Kano
* My Paranoid Next-Door Neighbor by Minami Kazuka (aka Minami Haruka).
* Sky Over My Spectacles by Tennouji Mio (yes, this title was swiped from DMP)
* And the ultimate license as far as I'm concerned...Koi wa Itsumo Arashi no You Ni by Shimazaki Tokiya! (Cue Jen jumping up and squealing and humiliating her travelling companion in front of a crowded room of people.)

For the rumor-quelling, rough release schedule, and Q&A, check the jump. :)

Yaoi Con discussion thread is here.
Rumors! The 801 Media people wanted to dispel (and in some cases, congratulate!) people for the interesting and often creative rumors that abounded on the Internet since the announcement of their creation. They also wondered at the sources...which we knew a couple of. *coughs*

1. 801 Media is NOT buying Be Beautiful or buying license from Be Beautiful. BB is still in business. See here.
2. 801 Media was NOT created by DMP employees who quit. It was created people who are still ALSO DMP employees.
3. 801 Media is NOT just another name for DMP/Juné that was created just to acquire more licenses. (I expect that they can get as many licenses as they can pay for and release.)
4. 801 Media has NOT bought Drama Queen LLC. DQ is also still going very strong. See here.
5. 801 Media is NOT going to be specifically an OEL company. They are open to the idea of someday publishing OEL titles, but for the moment they are licensing titles only.
6. DMP did NOT change it's name to 801 Media just to confuse people. IT IS A NEW COMPANY.
7. Yes, the 801 Media President DID once make kitty litter. (...I hadn't even heard this rumor...)
8. The guys of 801 Media were NOT auctioned off at the Bishounen Auction. (Which is a shame, because cameraman/guy-we-all-picked-on James was pretty cute. I'm so sad Earl couldn't make it though!)

Release Schedule (rough, subject to change, of course):

March 07: Ichigenme, Sky Over My Spectacles
April: Bondz
May: Affair
June: Love is Like a Hurricane 1
July: Ichigenme 2
September: Love is Like a Hurricane 2
October: My Paranoid Next-Door Neighbor
November: Love is Like a Hurricane 3

Q&A and other info:
* 801Media.com: The Full Version will go up soon, probably Wednesday. There will be forums where you are welcome to discuss titles you'd like 801 Media to license, of course.

* Several people expressed interest in works by Tori Maia, so Jordan is going to start doing naked dances around a fire during the full moon in hopes that they actually license something by her.

* 801 Media is not currently looking to have a single exclusive distributor.

* Books will run $15.95 (discounted if purchased online, it sounds like). They will include dust jackets like DMP titles, but they won't be quite as big, although they WILL be a little bit bigger than the original Japanese copies.

* If you pre-order their books, you'll get a free gift...black keychains that can hold an interchangable coin, and coins to go with different titles. (Juné is also offering a silver version of this keychain for their titles.)

* You WILL be able to get 801 books at bookstores-- Barnes and Noble, and possibly some Borders. (It depends on the local buyers as well as the national chain buyer.)

* 801 will NOT be bringing out any shota. Other than that, they intend to go as far with hardcore titles as the audience demands...as long as they don't get in legal trouble. ;) And yes, ALL their titles will be M for mature.

* On 801's fit within the realm of yaoi...they are licensing titles that Juné and other publishers might want to publish but are scared too. They hope to release a wider and more hardcore variety of titles.

* Someone asked if they would bring out doujinshi, and it sounded like a big fat "maybe" to me.

* 801 Media will not be doing novels.

* Internships and jobs are available to those interested; check eManga.com and Monster for listings.

* They hope to bring out creator blogs, like some publishers in Japan do. Whee!
