It's very pretty...but even pretty boys sitting around saying vague, melancholy things isn't a big turn-on for me.
| Look at the back of Same Cell Organism. Or look at the picture on my right, which is from the back cover. That is a boy. It might have confused you, when you picked it up. I mean, it's DMP, but didn't they just announce that they do non-yaoi? Oh but look! The June tag! So it must be the good stuff, right? | |
Well, it's definitely not het. And it is a very attractive set of stories. But they have a definite melancholy tone to them that I don't particularly enjoy. Sometimes it comes across as a complete lack of energy, in one story particularly. So, let me break 'em down for you.
The first few stories follow a genki boy and a somewhat less genki boy as they fall in love and deal with life. Pretty, but we've seen this story like a thousand times.
Next up is a one-shot about two boys who use an upstairs room as a sort of sanctuary and fall for each other while they're at it.
The next couple of stories follow a boy who, uh, finds an angel. Literally. (I guess maybe this angel is anatomically correct? I dunno, they don't address it really. He looks like a good kisser though.)
Aaaand the last one is another pair who are in love but aren't sure whether the other one is, etc. Yawn.
This scan is from that upstairs room one-shot, which is the particularly energy-lacking one I referred to. These guys say things like this
all the time. The manga does stuff like this a few times, where the characters sorta go off on something as a way of explicating or showing their personality or whatever. Kinda annoying.
That said, they're relatively thoughtful stories. But there's still no hot smex. C'mon, these stories are all about teenagers-- where're the hormones? Where's the passion? None of them seem to fall in love because they love anyone, it plays out like a duty almost.
The art is also somewhat inconsistant at times...in the upstairs room story, one character has sorty of an older pointy-chinned face, then later his face looks rounder and younger. The artist also sometimes shades his blonde characters' hair the same way as they do the dark-haired charcters' hair, so occasionally you'll get confused about who's who. Worst of all, between the stories, the characters look awfully alike, except for like hair lengths.
If you like the art though, the volume's got a good number of omake. Including the original angel story, which is WAY WAY CUTE (but only two pages...and contains one very odd hairstyle).
