[Column] Yaoi-Con 2007: The Follow-Up PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jen Parker

Image I had a few observations about this year's Yaoi Con that I never really got to address in our posts, so I thought I'd throw them together in a column, which serves the double purpose of proving that we do still occasionally do columns. Yay!

So first off: the people who were there weren't terribly surprising, but it seemed like there were a lot of people who should have been there who weren't. Here's a little list...

Moon and Sandals, Gerard and Jacques, Ichigenme...it seems like BL companies are jumping to snatch up works by Yoshinaga Fumi, and with good reason. Her soft, relatively minimalist art style combined with characters of depth, interesting plotlines, and fair balance of realism and over-the-top-itude make nearly every manga she's ever created a strong read, even if the volume in question isn't necessarily the reader's usual style.

With the growing multitude of Yoshinaga titles out there, I thought I'd put together a bit of a profile about the mangaka and her works. So, what follows is a short bio and then a list of Yoshinaga works with whatever info on them I could find (less is available for most of the ones that aren't already licensed, especially for her non-BL works).

The news hasn't been specifically yaoi-related, so we haven't really posted it, but today I'm going to use this column to talk/rant about several news that puts "parody" doujinshi in some serious trouble and a couple of ways it might affect not only BL fans, but anime/manga fans in general.

I don't know about you, but the first time I looked at a yaoi sex scene I was all kinds of confused. There were disembodied fingers floating in grey mist. Sometimes a hand is shown against a background of this same grey mist. Men were missing naughty bits. Lightning seems to come from fingertips. I found the sudden perspective changes confusing... {mos_sb_discuss:20}

[Column] The Dark Side of the Smut: Rape in Yaoi PDF Print E-mail
Written by Jen Parker

Not all of yaoi is light and fluffy like Only the Ring Finger Knows or Challengers. Much of it contains molestation, coercion, or rape of some kind. In fact, it might not be unfair to suggest that most explicit BL touches on at least one of these themes.

This isn’t the case in spite of what fans want, of course; it exists exactly because it is what many fans want. So why is that?

Note in advance that this article is written based on observations and admittedly minimal research where I’ve indicated it. I make no claims on being an expert on anything here; this is merely an editorial column and these are my observations. Note also that I will make some very broad generalizations here, and that there are certainly exceptions to them.
