You may have noticed a few changes around here at YaoiSuki. That's because we've moved to a new host, and in the process upgraded and altered a bunch of our features (most notably: embedded wiki and better forums). Unfortunately, we lost our user database in the move, so those of you who were signed up will unfortunately need to sign up again. It's a pretty painless process though!

Dany&Dany-- our runners-up for best global manga with their Yaoi Press book The Lily and the Rose --held a panel in one of the smaller panel rooms that was pretty full, and led by Yamila Abraham.
The duo is from the island of Sardinia, Italy and are big fans of manga, such as Naoki Urasawa (creator of Monster and 20th Century Boys) and Ai Yawazawa (creator of Nana). They've worked together for ten years writing and drawing, and Abraham notes that one of the biggest publishers in the U.S. is interested in translating some of their work.
She also announced that the twosome is working on a new project for Yaoi Press called Backstage, which has no release date yet but which will be a one-shot, full-book story. It will be published in the U.S. by Yaoi Press first and internationally later.
Apparently while they were growing up there were more Japanese cartoons in Europe than American, so they grew up with shows like Grandizer, Rose of Versailles, and Macross. They talked a bit about the history of yaoi in Europe, and in the beginning no publishers believed that BL could work in Italy. One publisher tried publishing Italian-made yaoi and folded after two years-- and then big publishers started importing and translating Japanese BL, which is cheaper than having it made. The success of those works opened up the way for more Italian-made BL like Dany&Dany's. Also, apparently Germany is bigger into BL than the U.S. Go fig!
Yamila also noted that next year, she'll be bringing M.A. Sambre-- the French woman who draws Yaoi Press' Dark Prince.
They also both do the art work as well as the writing work, by the way, but they each are in charge of drawing one of the two characters to keep the look of each character consistent.
And then we had to scoot out for our interview with Takanaga-sensei! We won't be posting the full version of that until we have time to transcribe it, by the way, which may or may not be tonight. We'll do our best! |

So there's no Kitty Media/Media Blasters panel, but we did chat a bit with an employee at their booth and picked up a few new tidbits, including a big one: I mentioned complaints about the cropping of the pages and was told that it's entirely something that happens with the printer. As a result, Kitty is changing printers-- so with luck they'll be improving on their print quality. Score!
A few other points:
- They actually have copies of the reprint of Crimson Spell here at the con, but they're not on bookshelves yet.
- Since Antarctic Press has ceased printing the first volume of Yayoi Neko's Incubus series, Kitty will be reprinting it with extra materials, including the Weapons of Mass Destruction doujinshi, a new cover, and new inserts. No date yet for that.
- Volume 3 of Incubus should be out soon, since Yayoi Neko is currently inking the final chapter.

Aaaaalrighty! The panel's not quite over, but they're just about to draw some prize winners and the like. So here's the rest of the scoop from Takanaga-sensei's panel, and of course check back for OUR interview with her later.
- She's currently working on Bokiyou na Silent.
- She's hoping to come out with a Koisuru Boukun (Tyrant who Falls in Love) doujinshi chapter in the winter of this year.
- Currently she's very busy, and she doesn't like hectic schedules, she likes to relax.
- Does she admire any other BL mangaka/writers? Her favorite anime is Ashita no Joe. Her favorite artist is Murata Renji, and she's always loved Moto Hagio.
- Favorite character she's drawn so far and would like to draw again: She loves all the characters she's made, but especially Souichi.
- She says she's really not the silent type, she loves to talk a lot.
- Advice to newbies and wannabes: if you draw a lot you'll draw better. If you have any free time, just keep drawing.
- She'd like to see Koisuru Boukun in English.
- On how she comes up with characters: When she develops characters, she establishes a single trait and then puts the character in a situation to see where s/he'll go from there.
- Another fan asked what her favorite scenarios were. She says she really likes "hetare" type, the lightly aggressive or "weak" seme.
- On inspirations: She has some experiences in her life or surroundings that influence her manga.
- Her favorite part of the creative process is when she inks, but she really likes all of the parts. But sometimes she really just wants to get the finished product out.
- Someone asked what the inspiration for the comedic elements of her stories are, and what the inspiration for the serious elements are. Takanaga-sensei says that her natural personality is more comedic, so it comes naturally to draw comedy stories, which she likes better than serious manga. When she draws serious manga it really depends on the characters themselves, and a lot of her serious aspects are inspired by the more serious parts of her life and herself.
- Sensei is a little worried about how her cat is doing without her in Japan.
- The next fan asked how she got into drawing manga, and if she plans to ever do an artbook. Sensei says she loved drawing manga as a child and had a close friend who pressured her into drawing boys love-- specifically Captain Tsubasa doujinshi. She's had some talks about an artbook, but no plans have gone forward so far.
- Her favorite series that she's done-- a difficult question, she says --is Koisuru Boukun.
- Will Souichi keep his promise to smex up Morinaga? It depends on Morinaga! She plans on continuing the series for another 2-3 volumes but isn't quite sure yet.
- This fan asked what Takanaga-sensei hopes fans experience out of her manga. She says in addition to BL fans, she genuinely wants people who wouldn't normally like BL to enjoy her work.
- Final question: how is she usually published, first in chaptered anthologies or first in tankobon? The answer, of course, is that it comes out in regular anthologies and is then collected in tankobon, as is typical for manga in Japan.

[YC07] So Far, Plus a Heads Up |

Saturday, 27 October 2007 |
So, henceforth: our 2007 Yaoi-Con coverage! Yesterday we had a blast at the Swap Meet, and then we went to the first of Yaoi-Con's two cafes: the Bishounen Cafe, running Friday-only and featuring actual men, most of whom will be auctioned off this evening.
Just to get bingo started: Jordan and I spotted the hotel staff looking politely horrified at the swap meet.
Since we had some time before the 801 Media party, we also popped by cafe #2-- Cafe Verfuhren, which we thought was really more fun in the long run. It's very tucked away though, but I promise, it's worth it-- and the food is actually good, too! ;) We may have a longer, more in-depth review of the two if time permits.
We had a lot of fun at the 801 Media, where we kind of ignored the laws of hospitality that say that you actually have to LEAVE at some point. There was much penis-shaped food to be had, including (but not limited to) donuts arranged to look like a penis (which we brought) and penis cakes (which we didn't)-- hit the jump for a couple of photos.
Today's panels incluuuude: 801 Media, the Mamiya Oki-sensei/Tsubasa Kawahara-sensei guest focus panel, the Hinako Takanaga-sensei panel, and our own interview with Takanaga-sensei.
We're probably going to be able to check in on the forums prior to the interview, so if you have last-minute additions to our questions, by all means-- post 'em!
That's it for now. Keep tabs on us for the rest of the day for all the coverage-- our RSS feed is here, or you can hit up the ol' LiveJournal. :D |
